Referee Blunders

12 February 2007

I have to confess that Wigan got the short end of the stick in their Premiership clash against the Gunners in the Emirates Stadium. Wigans coach has a good case for an arguement because the referee did not handle that match well and there where really plenty of refereeing blunders
Emile Heskey was definitely hauled down in the box by Mathieu Flamini who was the last man and certainly denied the ex-England international a clear goal scoring opportunity. I can however argue that even if Wigan Athletic were awarded a penalty for that challenge on the bullish attacker, it does not necessarily translate to a red card for Flamini neither is that a guarantee that the penalty will be scored……

My stance is open to conjecture but before I get strung up and lynched for my Wenger like position, it will do us good to remember that Nigel Reo-Coker was hacked down from behind as he was bearing down on goal and the Gavin Mahon the Watford defender who performed the dastardly act was not sent off. Pity that marlon Harewood threw away the resulting penalty though. Anton Ferdinand pulled down Darius Henderson the Watford attacker and did not even get as much as a yellow card for his efforts although he gave away a penalty which was dutifully converted by Henderson. What must have gotten under the Wigan coaching staff and teams skin was that the same Mathieu Flamini who may have been sent off ended up delivering a telling cross from an offside position which Fitz Hall turned into his own net.

Do not be too critical of Thierry Henry’s taunting of Chris Kirkland though. Wigan fought gallantly and used every trick in the book to try and get a win at The Emirates. It was just the relief of finally scoring against a very hard working and disciplined Wigan defence which must have gotten to the French man’s head.

I hope Wigan dont get relegated though.
